Outline of Courses
We have developed three courses
designed to move students in a direction that will provide them with
the best possible knowledge base for moving on to the advanced
classes offered at our learning center.
Our core courses include:
Understanding Your Computer--Basics:
This course provides a
fundamental introduction to computers and the use of the mouse and
keyboard. No previous computer knowledge or proficiency of the
computer keyboard or mouse skills are required to enroll in this
course. A home computer is not required to enroll in this course,
however, having a computer is highly recommended as it will greatly
enhance your ability to practice the skills learned in the
classroom. At the conclusion of this course the student should: be
comfortable using the mouse and keyboard; have some familiarity with
using the computer; and have experience starting and using a word
processing program.
Understanding Your Computer--Level 1:
This course is the pre-requisite to all courses offered at SeniorNet.
Students should have a proficiency of the keyboard, mouse skills,
and reasonable computer knowledge to register for this course.
Students will learn the basic settings of Window XP for the desktop,
mouse, and keyboard. Introduction to MS Word, the Internet, and
Microsoft Works Task Launcher are all
included in this course.
Understanding Your Computer--Level 2:
Level 2 takes
an in-depth look at Windows XP. Students will learn how to:
personalize their computer, customize the Start Menu, Desktop and
Task Bar; add features from the Internet; how to download and run
programs from the Internet; delete programs; file management tools of
Windows XP including saving files to a CD and XP's System Backup
program. Students will learn to set up User Accounts and Guest
Accounts; download and setup anti-virus and spam blocking programs.
Pre-requisite: Understanding
Your Computer - Level 1.
Advanced class offerings include:
Microsoft Word:
Software programs that are called word
processors, or word processing programs, enable you to type letters,
stories, reports, newsletters and other documents. Word
processing is an important function of computers. Almost every
document you prepare will require a word processing program.
This course is a good starting place for you to learn what a word
processing program on your computer can do for you. In this
class you will be using
Microsoft Word 2002. Pre-requisite:
Understanding Your Computer - Level 1.
Fun with Word:
This course is designed for those students
that have completed MS Word. A continuation course that will
explore MS Word toolbars including: WordArt, Drawing toolbar,
Picture toolbar, and Tables and Borders toolbar. Students will learn how MS Word can be used
to make greeting cards, holiday letters, and brochures using
ClipArt, Pictures, Borders, Watermarks, and special font techniques.
A fun and relaxing course with lots of fun stuff.
Pre-requisite:
MS Word.
Introduction to the Internet:
Students
will receive an overview of the Internet and how to manage your
address book, send and receive e-mail messages and send attachments
and pictures with your e-mail. You will learn the ways to navigate
on the Web securely and learn the many features of Google. You
will also learn how to properly forward and organize your e-mail
messages and how to download and save photos and files from the
Internet. In this course your instructors always include a
number of tips and tricks as well as how to set up a personalized
recipe page from a web site.
Pre-requisite: Understanding Your
Computer - Level 1.
Excel:
Learn to set up your own
home finance management files. Keep track of all your income
and expenses; your stocks and bonds; and your valuables.
Perform calculations, analyze information, and manage lists in
spreadsheets are just a few of the many features of Excel that the
student will become familiar with. Pre-requisite:
Understanding Your Computer - Level 1.
Print Artist:
This course contains
eight hands-on sessions designed to introduce you to the creative
and fun projects that you can do with Print Artist. This is an
incredibly easy to use program with lots of flexibility and
thousands of pre-designed projects that you can modify for your
personal use. Several thousand graphics, borders, frames and
the ability to include your personal collections of photos gives you
the flexibility to create most any type of project. The
program also includes hundreds of quotations that you can include in
a project. In these sessions you will learn how to select,
modify and create greetings cards, flyers, and photo albums.
This course uses the Print Artist 15 software which is available for
purchase from your classroom instructor.

Photo Editing
Using PictureIt 7.0:
Microsoft PictureIt! puts you in control of your photos
through a combination of powerful digital-imaging tools with helpful
wizards and professional-quality photo projects. PictureIt!
offers tools that let you make your digital pictures look their
absolute best. Students will learn to use photo-touch up and
scratch removal tools, correct contrast and brightness problems, fix
red eye and learn to use some of the over 500 available templates to
create frames, photo cards, calendars and other projects. Students
will use classroom digital cameras to take photos and then learn how
to download them onto the computer. Good
mouse control is critical for this course.

Understanding Your Computer - Level 1.
Family Tree Maker:
This is an introduction to genealogy using
Family Tree Maker. There is a lot to learn about genealogy. This
course focuses on introducing the basic components of the Family
Tree Maker program; not on teaching all of the many things someone
needs to know to research their family history. Some tips and
resources to provide more expertise are included in the course.
Typing:
The more accurate and
faster you are at the keyboard, the less laboring your time will be
on your computer. This course is highly recommended for those
students who have never learned to type or would like to refresh
their skills. Developing typing skills will greatly increase
the enjoyment of working on your computer. Typing training
begins with the Instructor leading students through touch typing
techniques and step by step exercises that will lead to fluent
typing. A CD and manual are provided so students can practice
at home at their own speed. Students registered in a SeniorNet class
need only pay a $5 fee to cover cost of materials.
Quicken:
Quicken is the
perfect way to see where your money is going with all the tools you
need to budget, balance and track your finances. Download and track
your checking, savings and credit card accounts - in one place;
Create and follow a budget Schedule payments and pay bills right
from Quicken; Verify accuracy of your bank statements and avoid any
inappropriate fees or charges; Simplify tax prep, find hidden tax
deductions and transfer information directly to TurboTax® software;
and much more.
